It’s hard to know where to go if you don’t know where you are.
Happy New Years Eve! I know we say it every time, but it’s hard to believe that we’re wrapping up another year, which invites us to reflect on the past and dream about the future.
To help you with that reflection, and since there are a ton of new people here, I’m sharing an exercise from earlier this year that seemed to help many folks. Here’s just a few of the comments it received:
As I reflect on this year, specifically about starting this newsletter, I’m so grateful and humbled by the community that has developed. A year ago there were just about 100 of you. Today there is over 1,000. 🤯 You keep me coming back and give me the motivation to work on my writing.
Whether you listened to the exercise earlier this year and doing it again, or are just coming across it the first time, I hope it helps you name where you’re at in this season of life. And I hope you walk away with a gentle invitation of how to move forward as we step into a new year.
I encourage you to listen to the audio and answer the questions that way. This exercise works best if you don’t know what question is coming next so you don’t get ahead.
If you want me to send you a document with the questions written out, ask me in the comments, reply to the email, or send me a direct message on the Substack.
I also would love to hear what came up for you during the reflection.
With Care,
Blake

20 Things I've Learned as a Therapist
The path to becoming a therapist for me is quite interesting. After graduating college, where I played football and earned a degree in religion thinking I’d become a pastor, I found my way to managing an art gallery and creative brand. It wasn’t until some personal issues arose with my girlfriend—now my wife—nearly a decade ago (a story for another day) that I stepped into a counselor's office for the first time.
Honor Your Capacity.
The community of people willing to engage with their story on a deeper level is growing, and I’m so grateful. As I mention in the Note, I’m building a new company with my best friend, and we’ve been batch recording episodes for the new podcast (more on that business later!). It’s been so fun, and there’s a big learning curve because it’s our first time doing this. I can’t wait to tell you more about it.
Barbershops, Dumbo, and Surrender.
I was heading to the barbershop after a long day of seeing clients (I'm a counselor for any new folks here), and the emotional weight of the painful things people were working through this day was acutely noticeable in my body. Walking out into 96-degree thick, humid Nashville heat didn't help.
