In the fall of 2016, I found myself in treatment for an addiction that had surfaced. Although it had been there all along, I just hadn’t seen it, and it was damaging my relationships.
I soon found myself in the basement of a church attending 12-step recovery meetings. Not long after, I met Jamie, who would become my closest friend.
Before walking into those rooms, we were maybe 50% honest with ourselves and the people we cared about, hiding behaviors, feelings, and needs, which led to loneliness and shame.
We slowly began to realize that vulnerability was not only necessary but could also lead to the connection we desperately needed.
However, we still found ways to hide. Maybe you can relate to that, 12-step recovery or not. Hiding whats really going on because you’re afraid of what someone will really think. Or you’re afraid of your own feelings.
At some point, one of us realized that, at our best, we could be 97% honest with each other—which was a vast improvement—but the remaining 3% we kept to ourselves kept us stuck in deeper loneliness and shame.
Soon, saying “Hey man, I need to share my 3%,” helped us to be fully honest and vulnerable, allowing us to be seen and known.
It became a concept we used with our wives, friends, and clients. We began to see how it could lead to deeper, more intimate connections in relationships.
Over the course of eight years, what began as an armchair theory to grant ourselves permission to be more honest slowly evolved into the idea of a brand—something we hope can help you build deeper connections with yourself, God, and others.
Well, it’s finally time to publicly announce it!
